Every Day by David Levithan follows the story of A, a being who wakes up in the body of a different person each morning. For a full day, they live as if they were that person. A cannot choose which body they inhabit each day, but they can access the person's memories to try and act as normally as possible.
For most of their life, A has tried to keep their existence a secret. But when they wake up in the body of a teenager named Justin, A falls in love with Justin's girlfriend, Rhiannon. By searching through Justin's memories and spending time with Rhiannon, A discovers that Justin mistreats his girlfriend and their relationship is tumultuous. A has never felt in love or like they belong with anyone before, but they begin to feel that with Rhiannon. A wants to help Rhiannon and become closer with her but knows that the next day, they'll wake up in an entirely different body.
Even after A switches to the next body, they cannot stop thinking about Rhiannon. A tries to figure out a way that they can communicate with Rhiannon again without scaring her. In another girl's body, A drives to Rhiannon's school just to spend time with her but doesn't know how to tell Rhiannon what's going on. Eventually, through email and more meet-ups, A reveals to Rhiannon that they wake up in a different body every day and have also fallen in love with her.
At first, Rhiannon is confused and doesn't know what to believe. But as she spends more time with A, she starts to fall in love with them, too. She feels that a relationship with A (friendship or otherwise) would be painful for both of them, however, and she doesn't know if it would be possible. At the same time, A is confronted by a boy named Nathan whose body they inhabited and used to talk with Rhiannon at a dance.
Nathan believes that he was possessed by A that night. He thinks that it is his duty to figure out what happened and possibly save others from A, who he assumes is a demon. An article is published about the experiences of others who have been "possessed" for a day and want answers.
Rhiannon stops emailing A for a while because she needs a break. Several days later, however, A wakes up in her body. They decide not to shower or break up with Justin in order to respect Rhiannon's privacy. Nevertheless, being in Rhiannon's body is a beautiful experience for them. At the end of the day, they write a letter to Rhiannon, wanting to be honest about what happened.
Rhiannon remembers the next day and emails A to discuss it in person. She tells A that the experience helped her trust A more but that she still doesn't want a romantic relationship with them. Later, however, Rhiannon wants to see A and tells them to meet her at her uncle's cabin. They kiss and almost have sex, but A stops her because the body they're currently inhabiting is still a virgin. A takes the body they are inhabiting home and promises that they will see Rhiannon soon.
A wants to see Rhiannon again, but they're unable to—first they inhabit the body of a girl with alcoholism and then a boy whose family is going to Hawaii. When they inhabit the body of the boy going to Hawaii, A stops to meet with Rhiannon before they have to leave. Rhiannon is angry because A didn't tell her where they went after that night. A hugs her, but just as they do, Justin walks in and calls Rhiannon a slut, then has a fight with A.
Later, Rhiannon admits that she wants to be with A and not Justin, but she feels she cannot break up with Justin yet. Rhiannon would date A if they stayed in the same body every day, but the way A's body changes with no pattern or reason is difficult for her to accept.
Nathan still wants to know what A is and why they inhabit different bodies, so A agrees to meet. Nathan listens to A's story and wants to meet again. A arrives at Nathan's house the next day only to find that Nathan has planned an exorcism with the Reverend Poole.
A realizes by talking with Poole that Poole is inhabited by a being like A but with malevolent plans. The being tells A that they could learn how to stay in the body of the same person for multiple days, but A feels that this would be wrong. A wants to be one person every day but does not want to harm strangers to do so. They are rattled by the idea that there are more beings like them in the world and that not all of them are kind.
Rhiannon sends A an email telling them that she wants to see them but is afraid of heartbreak. When they meet, A tells her all about Poole and that A is going to go away for a while to resist the temptation of Poole's offer Rhiannon is upset, but A feels going away is the right thing to do. They close their eyes and wake up in a body two hours away from their last one, determined to follow through with disappearing from Rhiannon's life forever.
